THIS Suite’S IN CHARGE

There’s always one boss in the family. If all the rooms in our house were family members, the Primary Bedroom would be the boss. She is calm, simple, and warm yet there’s a subtle respectability about her. It’s my favorite place to drift off to sleep and this room is extra special because our entire family has slept in it. It’s provided peaceful slumber for us, our pups, and sweet baby James. For purposes of this post, I kept the room on the minimal side but on any given day I dare say it looks like we actually live in it.

BEFORE AND AFTER:

Let’s talk about where we started. The basic footprint of the Primary remains the same as when we bought the place. I mean we did replace the flooring, drywall, and lighting. We also tweaked a few spacing things to make it more of a full suite. By converting the previous guest bath into a closet, taking a couple feet from the existing closet to enlarge the  Primary bath, and moving the doorway to the end of the hall we’ve maximized this corner of the house. It’s now a proper wing.

Something we love about this room is how much natural light it gets. The large sliders that open up to the pool and the two windows next to the bed allow for the soft morning light from the east and bright afternoon sun from the west. It also feels a little luxurious to have access directly from the bedroom onto the lanai. Apparently that’s not uncommon for homes of this era and locale but for this Georgia Gal it feels fancy.

STYLE DEETS:

For the wall color we chose Benjamin Moore Hazelnut Cream. It’s neutral with a bit of warmth to it and creates the perfect hue for cozying up. If I had to describe our room I’d say it’s a little bit boho meets vintage fresh. Basically it’s a few different styles mashed up into one. I love mixing the old with the new especially when it comes to furniture pieces. As you see here we have this gorgeous armoire that was made in the late 1800s and has been in the family for years. Pair that alongside our bed and nightstands from Crate and Barrel and the room feels quite balanced. The older pieces keep the design grounded while the new pieces bring it up to date. We also created a cozy corner. It’s a lovely spot for reading, having a cup of coffee, and rocking little James to sleep.

Who doesn’t love plush blankets, dreamy soft sheets, and pillows for days? These super yummy organic cotton sheets are from Under The Canopy. In Florida it’s too warm for a big down comforter and this pick-stitch quilt from Pottery Barn is lighter weight. For those chillier nights, or even days when you want to pretend it’s cold and just turn down the AC, this Casaluna chunky knit throw is perfection. I saw this throw on The Brain and The Brawn design blog (#obsessed) and had to have it “same day” delivered from Target. I’m not kidding. T.J. joked he would turn the Wifi off to prevent random decor items from “magically” showing up. He thinks there is a dark web just for shopping (insert eye roll). ANYWAY, if you haven’t already, you should check out The Brain and The Brawn because Jess has some of the best home styling tips and design inspo!

One of my favorite details in our bedroom are the black sconce lights over the bed. Everything has a tranquil color scheme but we needed something to really pop. The gray curtains and throw help to tie in the black. They also give the room some Yang to the Yin.

Sometimes you go into a project with a specific idea in mind. For several of our other rooms we knew exactly what we wanted and how we wanted them to look. The Primary Bedroom wasn’t quite like that. This room was more about feeling. How did it FEEL with each choice we made. I think it’s important to be in tune with that. Especially when it involves a room you’re going to spend almost 3,000 hours a year in sleeping. Unless you have a newborn and I’m sure that number gets cut into half. Thanks James! LOL
